On 23rd March 2020, life in the UK paused. Like our friends around the world, our streets emptied, and the lights of our favourite bars and restaurants were dimmed. Since the Prime Minister’s now-historic call for a national lockdown, life has evolved, and we have along with it. In Nic Joly’s most personal and ambitious release to date, the artist’s “thoughts, observations and emotions” from the 65 weeks between Boris Johnson’s announcement and the launch of the collection are represented in a series of ten unique 3D wall sculptures.
Handmade at the British sculptor’s Hampshire studio, these heartwarming artworks act as a sketchbook and visual journal. They are both humorous – including a salacious sex scene and poking fun at the toilet paper panic-buying fiasco – and poignant, exploring Nic’s struggle with depression and the love he feels for his wife and children. “I think a lot of us probably drank too much and indulged in various other things to keep us distracted,” says Nic. “We were all suddenly given a focus, a spotlight in our lives and the world we live in. The collection is the most personal I’ve ever done because it was born during a time when all I had was my family and myself.” Featuring his signature miniature figures, the small-scale works boast handwritten elements and intricate details, including hand-cut tissue paper and replica mobile phones. Influences are as varied as social media, The Beach Boys and the Garden of Eden, but an underlying sense of hope underpins the collection. As Nic adds wryly: “Smiles are far more contagious than any virus will ever be.” Each artwork is available in an extremely limited edition of 65. “I got to know my dark side, my black dog, a lot better than I had done throughout my whole life. I learnt to (for want of a better word) love it, and give it time. Doing that gave me power that I’d never had before.”
