MONUMENTAL
(adj.) Of great importance, influence, or size.
From the Great Sphinx of Ancient Egypt to Raphael’s frescoes in the Vatican and Michelangelo’s masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel, monumental art has moved audiences for millennia. Transforming reality, these large-scale artworks can convey powerful emotions, tell incredible stories and depict the awe-inspiring forces of nature. Or, as with Paul Kenton’s striking new Monumental collection, they can react to the world around them, metamorphosing into something unforgettable.
In this breathtaking body of work, the internationally collected contemporary cityscape artist has expanded his repertoire to explore seascapes and landscapes on a larger scale than ever before. Painted in oils and resin on aluminium, copper, canvas and brass, the imposing vistas encompass majestic oceans and mountains, along with dynamic scenes from cities like New York and London.
Inspired by his travels, each of the original artworks was painted by hand in Paul’s studio. His bold brush marks give the paintings an Impressionistic feel, with the artist adding: “It is spontaneous and energetic. It’s not a process: it’s an extension of my hand and mind trying to get the paint down in a way that is rapid, energetic and fluid.”
“As you progress through the painting, you’re telling a story.”
The metallic element of his work has a transformative effect; in different lights, the paintings take on a new life – glowing one minute and shimmering the next. Experimenting with patinas was a lesson in alchemy, allowing Paul to conjure clouds and waves upon the metals’ surface.
“Light is everything,” explains Paul. “It creates form, shape and mood. I play with shadows to help create perspective, with the little areas of light – like on the buildings – drawing your eye into the piece. As you progress through the painting, you’re telling a story.”
