One Small Step
Limited Edition Sculptures
After sending a sculpture of a breakdancing astronaut into space last year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landings, Whatshisname brings us a new collection of dancing spaceman sculptures in the One Small Step collection. His gallery in space, the Art Above Earth exhibition, was a sensation, and the astronaut sent into space has inspired him to create even more. “I chose the topic of astronauts because of my ongoing fascination by space and new the new discoveries of the James Webb space telescope,” the artist explains.
“The sculpture ‘One Small Step - En Pointe’ is my creative take on the Moon landing and how much fun it would be to dance on the Moon,” says Whatshisname. “The pose of the astronaut is set to imply the weightlessness of the Moon's low gravity. The idea for this sculpture came to me about five years ago when my daughters attended ballet classes. I watched the kids dancing with grace and lightness, something that I couldn’t do myself unless I was in zero gravity. I did a quick sketch and decided to make it happen.”
‘One Small Step – Together' depicts a couple immersed in a slow dance or in a passionate hug. “It shows the moment when it seems that the time has stopped. It represents a couple in love. Perhaps they have been away for a long time or perhaps they have just met. It is a sculpture saturated with deep emotion.”
“’One Small Step – Lift Off’ shows a couple frozen in time in a magical pose reminiscent of the movie Dirty Dancing. This seemingly impossible pose gives an illusion of the weightlessness of the Moon's low gravity. This dance pose requires a lot of trust from both dancers. It can be interpreted in many ways. One of my favourite ways is that the right partner can be uplifting and can elevate one another.”
