Exhibited everywhere from Hong Kong to Los Angeles, New York and Singapore, Whatshisname has already ruffled more than a few feathers on the contemporary art scene. His bold collaboration, Whatshisname X Castle Fine Art, is typically eclectic, featuring humorous sculptures and haunting silhouettes of famous film and TV characters from our childhoods.
The Polish-born sculptor and 3D graphics designer now lives in London. Unabashedly provocative, his fusion of architectural visualisation and themes of childhood, nostalgia, politics and pop culture has created artworks that inspire happiness while exploring our adult psyches. His work is a fascinating mixture of the nostalgic and the unheimlich – the uncanny, or ‘strangely familiar’.
“
It’s important to me to remember old things and be nostalgic about them, because they are a part of our lives and influence our next steps: that’s how we got where we are today.
”
“I would describe my work as innovative, modern Pop Art,” says Whatshisname, who has worked with notable artists including Mat Collishaw, a prominent member of the Young British Artists alongside Damien Hirst. “My work fits exactly where we are now in this modern Pop Art world.” His November 2023 release features icons of history and of pop culture – dancing astronauts, ghost-chasing movie characters, a pair of legendary characters from the world of gaming and iconic images from one of the best-loved fantasy films of all time which was made back in 1939, but still lives in our hearts today.
Whether you love his work or – like the London Underground, who banned it in 2012 – find it offensive, there is no question that Whatshisname is exactly what the art world needs right now: a fearless, unorthodox voice who isn’t afraid to get people talking. Whatshisname is a name that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
