Seascapes on Metal
“For the ocean paintings, I’m a keen surfer, and have been for 30-odd years. I’m drawn to the sea, and my ocean pieces are moments that I’ve experienced. I also think about the ocean a lot, and it’s great fun to paint.
“You’ll see that a lot of my paintings have reflections; I find it super-interesting to mirror what is above and below the horizon line. I love the way you can manipulate the paint in the reflection to create a surface. I find it fascinating what paint can do, actually.
“I’ve used resin for a lot of the wave pieces. I manipulated the resin and the paint within itself, so it’s almost shaping the wave. I love that. It’s such a fantastic medium for it, as the light bounces off. The translucence and pearlescence of the resin is amazing on the metal – it looks so cool. And in different lights, it changes throughout the day.”
“Light is everything: it creates form, shape and mood. I play with shadows to help create perspective, with the little areas of light drawing your eye into the piece.”
